چکیده

[1] We compare satellite altimetry from the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat, 2003–2007) to older topographic maps and digital elevation models (1965– 1990) to calculate long-term elevation changes of glaciers on the Svalbard Archipelago. Results indicate significant thinning at most glacier fronts with either slight thinning or thickening in the accumulation areas, except for glaciers that surged which show thickening in the ablation area and thinning in the accumulation areas. The most negative geodetic balances occur in the south and on glaciers that have surged, while the least negative balances occur in the northeast and on glaciers in the quiescent phase of a surge cycle. Geodetic balances are related to latitude and to the dynamical behavior of the glacier. The average volume change rate over the past 40 years for Svalbard, excluding Austfonna and Kvitøya is estimated to be 9.71 ± 0.55 km yr 1 or 0.36 ± 0.02 m yr 1 w. equivalent, for an annual contribution to global sea level rise of 0.026 mm yr 1 sea level equivalent.

Estimate of the total volume of Svalbard glaciers, and their potential contribution to sea-level rise, using new regionally based scaling relationships

We present a set of new volume scaling relationships specific to Svalbard glaciers, derived from a sample of 60 volume–area pairs. Glacier volumes are computed from ground-penetrating radar (GPR)-retrieved ice thickness measurements, which have been compiled from different sources for this study. The most precise scaling models, in terms of lowest cross-validation errors, are obtained using a m...

A new model for global glacier change and sea-level rise

The anticipated retreat of glaciers around the globe will pose far-reaching challenges to the management of fresh water resources and significantly contribute to sea-level rise within the coming decades. Here, we present a new model for calculating the twenty-first century mass changes of all glaciers on Earth outside the ice sheets. The Global Glacier Evolution Model (GloGEM) includes mass los...

Glacier changes in southeast Alaska and northwest British Columbia and contribution to sea level rise

[1] The digital elevation model (DEM) from the 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) was differenced from a composite DEM based on air photos dating from 1948 to 1987 to determine glacier volume changes in southeast Alaska and adjoining Canada. SRTM accuracy was assessed at ±5 m through comparison with airborne laser altimetry and control locations measured with GPS. Glacier surface elev...

Impact of resolution and radar penetration on glacier elevation changes computed from DEM differencing

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are now frequently used to calculate elevation changes and regional mass balances of glaciers, for example in the Alps (Berthier and others, 2004; Paul and Haeberli, 2008; Huss and others, 2010), Alaska and Canada (Larsen and others, 2007; Schiefer and others, 2007; Berthier and others, 2010), Patagonia (Rignot and others, 2003) or High Mountain Asia (Surazakov a...
